Energy: Meeting the Targets

Did you know the UK has a target of obtaining 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020?

According to the Carbon Trust, less than 6% of UK electricity currently comes from renewable sources. The Renewable Energy Association estimates that once other types of energy (such as energy for heat and transport) are taken into account, the total energy from renewable sources is just 2%.

Clearly the 15% target is ambitious, so what can you do to play your part?

Switch to a renewable energy tariff

By showing energy suppliers that there is a demand for renewable energy, you can act as a catalyst for investment in future technology. As well as electricity, suppliers are beginning to offer “green gas” which is generated using organic matter, usually from waste food or other products.

You could also choose to support smaller energy providers such as Good Energy, who only supply 100% renewable electricity, or Ecotricity who invest profits in new renewable technologies. These suppliers often have strong commitments to sustainability and initiatives such as support for local community projects, making them a socially responsible choice too.

Choose renewable for new projects

New technologies that use renewable energy are becoming more accessible and by investing in them you can demonstrate that you are a forward thinking organisation. If you are planning a new premises or overhauling an old one then consider how renewable technologies could be integrated into the project. Any initial costs will normally pay for themselves over a certain period.

Reduce fuel usage for transport

If your business uses fleet cars then you could reduce the energy you use for transport by choosing hybrid cars that use less fuel, or even electric cars. Staff training on efficient driving can also reduce fuel costs. Joining a car club such is another alternative and new locations are popping up all the time. Consider providing bicycles for staff and visitors to use during the day for travel to meetings or errands.

Use less energy

Sounds obvious, but by reducing the total amount of energy used, the relative percentage of energy from renewable sources will increase.
